Heartbreak for Under 17’s as they lose out 4-3 AET in National Cup Semi Final
FAI Under 17 National Cup Semi Final
Herbertstown 4 College Corinthians 3 AET
Our under 17’s bowed out of the National Cup last night in heartbreaking circumstances when as the game entered the final five minutes of extra time they conceded a very soft penalty. The penalty was awarded when goalkeeper David Coffey who had been superb all night came off hos line to meet the onrushing Herbertstown player, contact seemed minimal but as the ball squirted wide, the referee to the surprise of many awarded a penalty to Herbertstown which they duly converted.
It was hard to take for Corinthians who like their excellent opponents Herbertstown had contributed handsomely on the night to what was a genuine candidate for game of the season. The match was played in difficult conditions with constant drizzle and a blustery wind but both sides adapted superbly and provided a thrilling contest
Despite falling behind in the opening minutes, Corinthians fought back superbly and goals from Denzil Frnandez, Brian Cotter and Chris Og Jones had Corinthians 3-1 up after half an hour but crucially the excellent Herbertstown centre forward reduced the deficit almost immediately and half time came with Corinthians 3-2 up.
Corinthians suffered a major blow early in the second half when Adam Horgan was forced off with a leg injury and this seemed to knock Corinthians out of their stride for the next 20 minutes with Herbertstown dominating and eventually forcing a deserved equalizer. Indeed if it was not for Dave Coffey’s heroics at this stage Herbertstown would have gone in front. To their credit Corinthians came back into the game in the closing stages and could have won the game late on when following a great run James Cotter effort drifted agonizingly wide with the keeper beaten.
And so to extra time with chances again at both ends but just when it looked as if we were heading for penalty kicks; fate intervened and Herbertstown squeezed through to the final.
So a fantastic game which was a credit to both sets of players and coaches ended in ultimate disappointment for Corinthians but despite the defeat our lads were a credit to the Club on the night
