Trofao Meditaraneo Cup,Barcelona

Barcelona 2008

Congratulations to our under 15 Premier team, who won the Trofao Meditaraneo Cup over the Easter Weekend in Barcelona.

This is a highly prestigious tournament which is competed for each year in the Barcelona area. They were twenty two teams participants this year which included teams from Rep. of Ireland, N. Ireland, Scotland, England, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, France etc.

As each game is only forty minutes duration conceding an early goal is a great disadvantage. In the seven games that the team competed in they conceded no goals

and won each game without having to rely on a penalty shoot out. This was indicative of the way the team responded to the coaching staff of Pat Keane and Brian O'Connor. Special mention must go to Pat in the way he motivated his team prior to each game. The team responded magnificently and were a credit to themselves, the club and to Ireland.

The coaching staff are also to be congratulated  in making the winning of this competition a team effort.

The full panel of players were utilized through out the tournament and each responded magnificently to the challenge. However , special mention must go to  the mid field duo of Alan Cronin and David O'Leary who were exceptional through out. Well done to both Cian McWhinney and Kevin O'Connor who were unable to play due to injuries but supported the team from start to finish with no less enthusiasm.  With the spirit and

the ability that this team has displayed they will now be looking forward to their forthcoming game in the National Cup quarter final against St. Kevin's Boys in Dublin next Sunday.

Well done to all and good luck next week in the National Cup.

Tournament Details

Corinthians were drawn in Group 4 and had to finish in the first two positions in a group of five to make the quarter finals. They opened with a nervous 1-0 win over Eidenza from Italy and then followed up with an excellent 1-0 win over Fauldhouse from Scotland who were to finish runners up in the group. They were then held scoreless for the only time in the tournament as they shared the points with Warrington before overcoming Swedish side IFK Vaxholm 2-0 to top the group.

However the best was yet to come as Corinthians hit top form in the knockout stages. In the Quarter Finals they were always in control against French side C S Chenois and thoroughly deserved their 1-0 victory. In the semi final they took on a physically bigger Shankill Boys side from Belfast but showing great heart and desire they matched their opponents physically and eventually their superior foot balling ability carried Corinthians and goals by Daragh O' Sullivan and David O' Leary eased Corinthians to a 2-0 victory. In the Final Corinthians opponents were highly rated Dutch Side HVV Hollandia

The final itself was a nail biting affair, which started very well for our lads. After a competitive opening few minutes, Mark Parks gained possession of the ball in the outside left position before cutting inside following a clever decoy run by Ian James. With the opposition defence split Mark hit an unstoppable right foot shot into the left corner of the oppositions net. HVV Hollandia were now stunned and it wasn't long before Darragh O'Sullivan nipped into the opponents area to secure the second. Things were now going well for Corinthians until Darragh was forced to leave the pitch on the stroke of half time following a second yellow card. The second half was backs to the wall stuff but the

stubborn Corinthians defence which had been in excellent form through out the tournament  was not going to be beaten at this stage and it was only a matter of seeing out the time before Ryan Levis(Capt.) was to raise the cup in front of the cheering travelling supporters.

The successful Corinthians panel was ;David Hanrahan, David O' Donovan, Ryan Levis, Luke Connolly, David O' Leary, Alan Cronin, Cian Mc Whinney, Mark Parkes, Daragh O' Sullivan, Kevin O' Connor, Calvin O' Callaghan, Cannice Caffrey, Daniel Cronin, Ian James, James Furlong, Kyle O' Shea
