Street League Finals Day 2013
Great credit to all concerned as finals day beats the weather
Soggy But Enjoyable Street League Finals Day
Over the years we have been extremely fortunate with the prevailing weather conditions on Street League Finals Days but sadly the 2013 finals day proved the exception to the rule. The rain started before the action got underway but to the credit of everyone involved the show went on and between 250 and 300 kids and their families turned up to make light of the conditions.
In a strange way; almost despite the weather conditions, it was a fantastic day as everyone worked together to make the day as enjoyable as possible for the kids. The kids themselves battled away and were a credit to their families and the Club. In the end they trooped off the pitch like drenched rats with a smile on their face, lunch bag in one hand and trophy in the other hand.
There was some cracking games throughout the day with the highlight being the Under 9 Cup final which saw PSV inspired by skipper Sean O’ Leary upsetting the odds as they got the better of Appoel Nicosia in a thriller. Portugal were in Scintillating form as they claimed the under 8 title with Cathal Buckley leading the way and it was Villareal captained by Aidan Twomey who took the title at under 10 level.
At under 6 & under 7 level everyone was a winner and in the conditions that prevailed it could be no other way.
The penalty competitions are always a big highlight on Finals day and this was certainly the case again this year. A big thank you to the Club’s schoolboy goalkeepers with out whom the event would not be possible. The winners this year were as follows
Under 7: James O' Brien
Under 8: David Healy
Under 9: Donnacja O’ Callaghan
Under 10: Oisin Kirwan
“Corky” came along to help with the presentation which was much appreciated by our underage players, many thanks to Linda O’ Mahony from Cork City for organizing same and to Corky himself for giving up his valued time to support our finals day.
A big thank you to the many people who contributed to make this year’s finals day possible, thanks in particular to
The ladies Committee and in particular, Marie Cruise O’ Shea, Niamh Buckley, Maureen Hurley, Marian Baldwin, Mary Lenihan, Amanda Walsh and Margaret Fox for all their help on the day and throughout the year.
A big thank you to all the Club coaches who have given their time throughout the season and to all the parents who have supported the Club during the year. Their commitment has been fantastic and I know the kids really appreciate it.
Special thanks also to the Grounds man Denis Barry and everyone who helped to get the pitches, goals etc. ready for finals day.
