Former Corinthian Schoolboy Stars Making Waves Cross Channel
Dave Meyler made his return to the Premier League on the opening day of the new season when he starred in the middle of the field for Hull City in their 2-1 victory over champions Leicester City. Now aged 27 Dave had played in the Premier League previously with Hull and Sunderland. A member of Marin O’ Neill’s squad for the Euro Finals Dave started his soccer career as a six year old with Corinthians coming through the Club’s underage and schoolboy sections before moving to League Of Ireland Clubs Cobh Ramblers and subsequently Cork City when he was fifteen.
With Dave at Hull City is another former Corinthians Schoolboy star; Brian Lenihan; unfortunately Brian has been plagued by injury since his move from Cork City in August 2014. He did make his league debut for Hull against Bolton towards the end of last season and hopefully if he can stay injury free Brian will get his chance this season. Brian joined Corinthians as a six year old and was an exceptional schoolboy player being capped by Ireland at all levels up to under 21. He moved to Cork City as an 18 year old and went straight into their League Of Ireland squad
It has been a fantastic start to the season for another former Corinthians schoolboy star Eoghan O’ Connell; the arrival of new manager Brendan Rogers has seen Eoghan promoted to first team duty and he has been outstanding as Celtic have made a great start to the season including becoming the first former Corinthians player to feature in the Champions League. Eoghan joined Corinthians as a five year old and was a prodigious talent, himself and Brian Lenihan played on the same Corinthians Under 11 side, which went down 2-1 to St. Joseph Boys in National Cup final. He joined Celtic as a seventeen year old and having got his chance this season has taken it with open arms
