Under 17’s win Gus Walsh Cup
Gus Walsh Cup Final
College Corinthians 2 Rockmount 1
It is always great to win a cup final in Turners Cross and this was certainly the case last Friday night as our under 17’s turned in a superb team performance to get the better of Rockmount in a very entertaining final. Football certainly was the winner on the night as both sides moved the ball around sweetly on the slick Turners Cross pitch.
Corinthians started brightly controlling the early possession and deservedly went ahead on 15 minutes when following a short corner routine Ross Welch fired a superb shot across the Rockmount keeper into the far corner of the goal. Boosted by this fine start Corinthians pushed on and it came as no surprise when Colin O’ Brien added a second following a fine turn and strike inside the penalty area.
Two goals to the good at half time Corinthians looked in good shape but Rockmount to their credit came more into the game in the second half and following a period of pressure reduced the arrears with 15 minutes to go. This made for an exciting finish as Rockmount pushed on in search of an equalizer and Corinthians launched several counter attacks which should have led to a clinching third goal but didn’t. In the end Corinthians were relieved to hear the final whistle.
Congratulations to the management team of Cormac Cotter, Declan Cooke and Donal O’ Leary and to the entire squad on a great team effort; anytime a team wins silverware particularly in a fine theatre like Turners Cross is a special and memorable time
